Gentlemen,

During the March meeting of the Swan Lake Association, a concern was raised concerning the history and future of the Swan Lake dam.

The 2009-10 water levels, which have been impacted by unusual but significant patterns of rain, has left many property owners questioning the continued absence of a spillway on the dam.

This past winter saw the water level of the lake rise within 6 inches of the maximum agreed level. Without a spillway in place a breach could easily compromise or totally destroy the existing dam.

Though communication with the dam committee it is our understanding that Maine Hydro, in it’s licensing with FERC, agreed to install a spillway in 1979, but has yet to do so.

We request that the selectmen look into the situation on our behalf and the behalf of all property owners surrounding the lake itself.
